Mayan Backstrap Weaving

This is a multi-day class (see schedule below).

Learn to weave on a Mayan backstrap loom! The backstrap loom is one of the oldest known technologies in the world and evolved with humans, on different continents, with the cultivation of cotton. You will learn about the loom from fiber artist Sari Monroy Solís (Maya Kaqchikel) who learned to weave from her family and elders in Guatemala.

In this workshop, you will begin by connecting your body to the loom, naming the parts of the loom, and learning the basics of warp, weft, and weaving. First, you will learn to do plain weave and then progressively advance to single-sided brocade in various colors. You will learn the fundamentals and leave this workshop with everything you need to continue your practice, including: your pre-warped cotton backstrap loom, tools, thread, handouts, and access to pre-recorded videos for future reference.
