Woven Without Rules: A Handwoven Hat

Date & Location

Oct 09, 2026, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Alaskaland: First Presbyterian Church, 2300 Airport Way, Fairbanks, AK 99701, USA

Workshop Details

This adventurous weaving class centers on an intuitive, free‑style approach to cloth making.

Students will bring a pre-threaded loom (a rigid heddle loom is perfect but more complex looms are welcome as well) as well as their own yarn of any sort to create their own one of a kind, hand-designed woven hat.

Rather than following patterns or rigid rules, you will be encouraged to explore texture, color, and structure by feel, allowing the fabric to evolve naturally. Gentle instruction will keep the focus on process over perfection, offering a calm, creative environment where weaving becomes both a wearable artform and a mindful, reflective practice.

Date and Time: October 9th, 5pm-8pm

Location: Alaskaland: First Presbyterian Church

Instructor: Farrah Weinhart

Age Range: 16 to Adult (ages 13-15 may register if accompanied by adult)

Skill Level/Prior Skills Needed: Intermediate, must have familiarity with a pre-threaded loom and the ability to create a plain weave.

Materials Students Must Bring:

  • Pre-Threaded loom (rigid heddle is perfect but more complex looms work fine too - as long as they can make a plain weave)

    • At least 2 yards of warp (any color is acceptable but black is the most versatile for color exploration)

    • Two shafts

    • Setup for plain weave in a smooth, stretchy yarn

  • Weft yarn in a variety of colors, gauges, and unique textures! Handspun yarns are especially gorgeous in this style
